Abstract

Hemiplegic gait was characterized by the loss of neuromuscular coordination and control. The angle-to-angle diagram has potential of assessing the neuromuscular coordination and control. We tried to classify the hemiplegic gait pattern by angle-to-angle diagram in order to assess the hemiplegic gait in terms of neuromuscular coordination and control and investigate the characteristic of the groups. Fourty-six hemiplegic gaits were analysed by the telemeterized gait analysis system which demonstated angle-to-angle diagram and other kinematic data. Three groups were defined by Wad's minimum variance cluster analysis, in that variables were Pa(perimeter /√area) and area of the angle-to-angle diagram of the affected side, Group 1(Pa<6.5 and area≥450 Degree2) was good, Group 3(Pa≥6.5 and area<450 Degree2) was poor, and Group 2(Pa<6.5 and area<450 Degree2) was borderline in terms of neuromuscular coordination and control. Brunnstrom atage, gait state(aids), stride time and swing time were different between the groups. We conclude that this grouping by the angle-to-angle diagram is outstanding in terms of assessing neuromuscular coordination and control and gait state of hemiplegic gait.
