Nerve Conduction and Electromyographic Studies in the Spinal Cord Injured Patients

Abstract

This electromyographic study was undertaken to assess the peripheral system in patients with spinal cord injured. 7 patients were paraplegia of spastic type while 3 were flaccid type. In all patients, the lesion was above T 10 sensory level ranged from C5 to T10.

There was no evidence of any clinical, laboratory or radiological abnormality that might disturb function of lumbosacral cord, cauda equina or peripheral nerve. Electromyographic abnormalities consisting of denervation potentials with fibrillation or positive sharp wave at rest, slowed conduction and inexcitability of nerve were demonstrated in the lower limbs of 9 patients (90%). Abnormalities in motor conduction study were more apparent in flaccid type (p<0.01), while abnormalities were more apparent in sensory in spastic type (p<0.01). These finding suggest a diffuse neuropathy of unknown cause.
