A Follow-up Study of Neurogenic Bladder Management in Spinal Cord Injury Patients -A Preliminary Study-
Abstract

Urogenic complications are still one of the major causes of death in spinal cord injury patients and proper management of neurogenic bladder is critical in physical and social rehabilitation of the spinal cord injured.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the present method of bladder management at home after discharge from hospital, and identify the problems arised from their method of bladder management in 35 spinal cord injury patients to contribute to find out the proper method of neurogenic bladder management at home.

The subjects are 35 spinal cord injury patients who were discharged from the rehabilitation department of PMC from September 1974 to April 1988.

The results are as follows:

1) Among the 35 patients, the most common voiding method was percussion and Credé maneuver.

2) The prevalence of urinary tract infection was 51.7% in 35 patients. The voiding methods which show higher urinary tract infection rate are percussion and Credé maneuver, external condom drainage, and intermittent catheterization in order.

3) There was an increasing tendency of urinary tract infection rate as the follow up period was increased.

4) E. coli was the most common cause of urinary tract infection.

5) Socioeconomic factors can affect the patients in the management of neurogenic bladder.
