Abstract

The amputation of lower extremity leads to loss of effective bipedal gait and often result in loss of ability for self-care with bed or wheelchair confinement. These amputee are predisposed to degenerative disease, and its morbidity and mortality increased.

This study was performed to compare morbidity of degenerative disease in above-knee amputee with that in below-knee amputee.

The major results are as follows;

1) The morbidity of hypertension was significantly high in above-knee amputee than below-knee amputee.

2) The morbidity of cardiovascular accident was significantly high in above-knee amputee than below-knee amputee.

3) The morbidity of diabetes mellitus showed no significant difference between above-knee amputee and below-knee amputee.

4) The morbidity of ischemic heart disease showed no significant difference between above-knee amputee and below-knee amputee.
